A carjacking yesterday afternoon near the Britannia round-about is reflective of the violence and lawlessness that is ripping through Adelaide’s suburbs. A man driving along Wakefield St approaching the Britannia roundabout at about 5PM yesterday was pulled from his car. His car was last seen driving on Payneham Rd Evandale. David Ridgway, Shadow Police Minister said that Police Minister Michael Wright must confront the fact that present policing strategies are not getting on-top of the rising violent attacks occurring in Adelaide. “Even the Rann Government’s own Social Inclusion Commissioner Monsignor David Cappo has failed the Rann Government on tackling the social and criminal problems that he identified in his 2007 report ‘Breaking the Cycle” giving them a ‘one out of ten’ when speaking on radio this morning,” Mr Ridgway said. “The Rann mantra of being ‘tough on crime’, and that ‘we have record numbers of police’ has failed to lessen the frequency and ferocity of the violent crime. “In just the last four weeks there have been more than 30 violent attacks on people, in their homes, at work or as they drive their car. “There must be a change in strategy to tackle crime at its roots and to deter violent thugs. “Are there enough police on the beat to deter these cowardly thugs, are they adequately resourced to confidently apprehend and or deter criminals? “Where are the extra numbers of police officers that are regularly promoted, where are they working? – the public regularly complain they never see them. “Police are not visible on the beat in adequate numbers to stop the violence, deter violent gangs or to instil a sense of security in the community”.
