Violent crime in South Australia is on the rise with more than 17,000 people assaulted during 2008. Damning figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in the 2008 Victims of Crime Statistics paint a picture of endemic violent crime in SA. “Violent assault has increased steadily since 2002 with 17,178 people becoming victims of assault in 2008 - that is about 50 people per day,” Mr Ridgway said. “Sexual assault continues to have a violent and drastic impact on five people per day in SA. According to ABS figures, between 2002 and 2008: • Homicide and related offences increased by 22.6% • Armed Robbery has increased by 10.4 % • Assault has increased by 3.9 % “These violent crimes against people are crimes that all South Australians want stopped. “We deserve to live in a safe and predominantly non-violent community. “Premier Rann can not continue to talk his way out taking practical and decisive action to confront and curb the violent nature of crimes that are on the increase in SA. “To tackle and to deter violence we must have far more well resourced police officers visibly patrolling our streets.”
